The Owlet Moths (Noctuidae) are mostly dull-coloured butterflies that are active at night. Most species have grey colours, but there are also species whose rear wings are brightly colored. The forewings often have two owl marks, the oval and kidney marks. The wingspan is usually a maximum of 50 mm. The owl family is the largest family within the Dutch macro moths. The spotted owls belong to the subfamilies Acronictinae, Amphipyrinae, Bryophilinae, Cuculliinae, Eustrotiinae, Hadeninae, Heliothinae, Ipimorphoninae, Oncocnemidinae, Noctuinae, Plusiinae, Stiriinae, and Xyleninae. Particularly in the division of the owlet moths into subfamily and tribe, I encountered some significant differences. My starting point remains the NCBI, a resource of the US government.
