Traditionally, the Hadeninae are considered a subfamily of the owlet moths (Noctuidae). Although modern systematics sometimes shifts the exact taxonomic classification, with various tribes regularly merged with or moved to the subfamily Noctuinae, many ecological and hobbyist circles still use this name.
However, modern phylogenetic studies have led to more stable taxonomic insights. This website uses the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) database as a starting point. For this reason, the species that many scientists still place among the Hadeninae, have been moved to the Noctuinae.
The Orthosiini enter the NCBI database as a separate tribe under the Noctuinae, and the Leucaniini and Tholerini are merged with the Hadenini. This database does not include the Eriopygini.
